Position Overview
The Director of Market Analysis will lead the Singapore team of analysts and work closely with global trading desks in London and Houston. This individual will play a key role in identifying and proposing trading strategies based on comprehensive fundamental analysis. They will focus on crude oil, refined products, NGL, LPG, and renewable markets, using econometrics, linear programming, and other quantitative methods. The Director will engage directly with trading managers to assess current and potential business needs and drive actionable insights to support profitable trading decisions.
Key Responsibilities
Fundamental Market Analysis
- Analyze crude oil, clean products, fuel oil, NGL, LPG, and renewable markets to support trading desk positions.
- Identify market anomalies, provide actionable insights, and advise traders on how to capture physical or financial positions to exploit market opportunities.
- Develop short- and long-term market forecasts using quantitative methods such as econometrics, linear programming, and statistical models.
Collaboration with Traders
- Proactively engage with trading managers to understand current and potential trading strategies.
- Collaborate with traders during weekly meetings to contribute to short-term market views and generate potential trading ideas.
- Provide ad-hoc analysis and support data augmentation exercises for the Singapore team.
Team Leadership & Development
- Lead and mentor the Singapore-based market analysts, fostering their growth for future roles within the commercial organization.
- Coordinate the team's efforts to improve the accuracy of supply and demand models, with a focus on short- and medium-term forecasts.
- Prepare and present analysis for global trading meetings, ensuring the team contributes effectively to the organization's global market strategy.
Global Coordination & Networking
- Collaborate with global teams in London and Houston to align strategies and market views.
- Build relationships with external consultants and industry analysts to deepen market understanding and stay abreast of industry trends.
- Work with the Chief Economist's office to update corporate long-term price forecasts.
Innovation in Analytical Tools
- Implement and refine advanced econometric models and quantitative tools to enhance market forecasting.
- Explore new methods for improving market analysis efficiency and model accuracy through coding in Python, R, SQL, VBA, or other relevant programming languages.
Required Qualifications
- Educational Background: Master's degree (or higher) in Engineering, Finance, Economics, or a related field.
- Experience:
- 10+ years of experience in market analysis at a major oil company, commodity trading house, or investment bank.
- Experience in key trading hubs such as London, New York, Dubai, or Houston is a plus.
- Proven experience in financial, economic, or statistical analysis and modeling.
- Previous experience leading a team of market analysts is essential.
- Technical Skills:
- Strong proficiency in Excel, Access, and other database or statistical software.
- Experience in economic model development and coding (SQL, VBA, Python, R, or similar languages).
- Soft Skills:
- Excellent written, verbal communication, and presentation skills.
- Strong interpersonal and collaboration abilities, especially in cross-functional and international team settings.
Desirable Skills
- Experience working closely with global trading desks and economists.
- Familiarity with renewable energy markets and alternative energy trading strategies.
